In order to establish a proof of concept on the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to/accompanying intestinal dysbiosis causing growth retardation, we will characterize the inflammatory response in oral and stool samples to establish whether dysbiosis intestinal i) “comes” from a dysbiosis of the oral cavity accompanied by prior inflammation in the oral cavity or ii) if the taxa relating to intestinal dysbiosis arise from a prior disruption of the intestinal environment which would allow the “decompartmentalization” of the gastrointestinal tract and the colonization of the intestine by species associated with the oral cavity.
This is essential in order to establish effective measures for the management and, above all, prevention of intestinal dysbiosis and EEP leading to growth retardation.
